I admit sometimes packaging is holding the key to make me splurge. Without having the pretty packaging, I could have ignored this Lavshuca Liquid Lips totally at Lavshuca counter of HK Sasa store. Without an expectation, I received both the sample as GWP.

Estee Lauder Take It Away Gentle Eye Makeup Remover

March 29th, 2010 — 6:59am

From my previous experiences with gentle eye makeup remover, none of them able to remove extreme waterproof mascara thoroughly in a minute. Technically Bi-phase (dual layer, oil and liquid) kind of remover should be the effective one for any eye makeup because oil is still the best and gentle ingredient to dissolve makeup. I suppose a moisturizing lotion will greatly help with drier skin condition, but realized that isn’t flexible in my living country. Biotherm Biosource Hydra-mineral Cleanser

March 29th, 2010 — 6:59am

Sensitive nose like me, I hardly addicted to any fragrance, especially I can feel dizzy and vomitous with wrong fragrance. This Biotherm Biosource Hydra-mineral Cleanser is one of the exception. It particularly attracted me by its sweety, refreshing, florally scent. The pleasure of “green-tea” smells heavenly to me.

Review: B.Liv Off with those Heads

March 29th, 2010 — 6:59am

Item Reviewed: Off with those Heads

Price/pack size: US$63 (45ml)

Available at: Onlineno information was provided on where to get b.liv. It used to be available in Sasa but I don’t see the brand anywhere now! Weird!

Ingredients:

Purified Water (Aqua), Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis) Extract, Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) Extract, Carbomer, Propylene Glycol, Menthol, Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) Oil, Poly(Oxy-1,2-Ethanediyl)Α-(Donyl Phenyl)-Ω-Hydroxy, Sodium Hydroxide, Perppermint (Metha piperita )Oil, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Diazolidinyl Urea.

Description: Off With Those Heads removes white & blackheads without violence or pain, and stops them from appearing ever again. The gel softens the clogging blocking your pores, allowing for effortless extraction and removal of all sores. Its essence ingredients keep oil secretions under control, and skin irritation will never again rule!

Use Off With Those Heads daily, on your cleansed, towel-dried face:-

1. Pump 2-3 pea-sized drops of Off With Those Heads onto your palm.

2. Apply on T-zone areas, or areas with black and whiteheads.

Review:

This is a follow up review from Cellnique’s Pro Sebum Gel (they have now repackaged it and are selling it under B.Liv brand name). I didn’t realise how bad my blackheads were when I stopped using Cellnique. And it was a silly reason for not using it – I didn’t like the brand name B.Liv and the childish packaging. I still prefer the previous elegant looking bottle.

Anyway, the product is still the same – transparent runny gel that spreads easily onto skin and absorbs quickly. There’s a cool sensation on skin, due to the peppermint oil. It dries matte so I can skip the powder if I want.

A few days after using OftH, I tried doing an extraction myself and the blackheads popped out easily, with nary a pressure! I had used the product for about a month when I went for a facial and I checked with the lady if I had a lot of blackheads. She said “no!”, so I was really pleased that the product worked. Usually, I would have many blackheads if I did not do my regular extractions.

Rating: 5/5

Would I buy again: Yes, if it is easily available

Review: The Ultimate Wellness Haven

March 29th, 2010 — 6:59am

Place Reviewed: The Ultimate Wellness Haven

Price: S$35 for 60 min massage (I had a special rate voucher)

Available at: Shaw Centre, Bt Batok, Changi Airport T2 Transit Hall

Services available:
Facial, massage, body scrubs, hair removal treatments, body masques, slimming treatments,

Review:
I’ve been on a spa whim lately, going for cheap deals when  I see one. This time, I came across The Ultimate when I was working one weekend. $35 for a 60 minute massage, $48 if you want to add a body scrub, is a pretty good deal!

So I visited the Bt Batok spa last night as it was pretty near me and I think I needed to destress after working my March weekends away. The Civil Defence club was easy to locate as I’m familiar with the area, but once I’m in, I took 5 minutes to find the spa. The many blocks did not link to each other, and if they did, it was only on certain levels. Totally confused me!

Entering the spa, I was greeted by an air of elegance – soothing music, warm ginger scents and the distant sound of waterfalls. The staff was friendly and quick to greet me, and also well-trained. Customers (both waiting for  their treatments, and those who have just finished their sessions) were sitting quietly enjoying their drinks. I was served a ginger tea to warm my senses while waiting for my therapist to come pick me.

The rooms were behind this screen that brought me to a different world. This  is where the ‘waterfall sound’ came from – the setting was almost like an outdoor spa! I was brought to this discreet room where there was an attached toilet and a massage bed. I quickly changed and got started.

The therapist first started by sprinkling some lavender EO on the cloth where I was lying face-down to help relax my mind and switching on the electric blanket so that I wouldn’t feel cold. I love lavender so I was drifting away pretty fast.

I requested for firm pressure and I found myself turning into jelly when the  therapist massaged my legs and arms with firm, long strokes. It was like she was pushing the stress and tension out of me. I also enjoyed it when she cracked my joints – totally enjoyable, though somewhat  scary cos not everyone  can do it (you could suffer a sprained neck or worse if not done  properly). My neck and lower back were loosened up after the treatment. As she massaged my scalp, I was away in lala land.

After the treatment, I was brought to the same recep area and was served ginger tea and a dessert (barley with beancurd skin – supposedly good for skin). The dessert was a tad too sweet for me so I didn’t finish it but it was cooked to perfection – the barley was tender to the bite and the beancurd skin was soft. The sales consultant came by to speak to me, but she didn’t do much hardselling. I wasn’t prepared to purchase a package because I hardly have time to utilise the sessions and it was often way out of my budget. When I told her that I’ll think about the package she offered me (30 sessions for $2200, I think), she was cool with it, and still very friendly.

A big thumbs up for this spa and its staff! Pity spa prices are always sky high, so unless there’s a great promotion that I cannot say no to, I won’t take up a package. Usual prices for a 60 min massage is from $180 onwards.

Rating: 4/5

Would I buy again: Maybe, if there was a good promotion.

Review: Dr Jart Black Label Detox Healing BB Cream

March 29th, 2010 — 6:59am

Item Reviewed: Dr Jart Black Label Detox Healing BB Cream

Price/pack size: S$32 for 50ml tube

Available at: exclusively at Watsons

Ingredients:

- Arbutin : Whitening

- Pore Purifying Complex : Provides Oxygen to Your Skin

- Hyaluronic Acid : Mosturizing

- Coenzyme Q10 : Gives Your Skin Tension

- Centella asiatica extract : Protects Your Skin, Relief

Description:

Triple-function of whitening, wrinkle decrease and UV protection. It has a soft, moist application and provides a natural skintone.

Review:

The sample received is a small tube, around 5-7ml?

Texture of the BB Cream was runny, much like a liquid foundation, or even a tinted moisturizer. It spread easily on skin, without much tugging. However, it lacked coverage. It melted into skin and disappeared. It looked like I applied tinted moisturizer, with my scars still very much visible. I have some dark scars from my acne days and I often use mineral makeup to cover the scars. I thought I might be able to use less mineral makeup if I used a BB cream under it. It was weird for me because I also have the silver label and it has pretty good coverage! Black label was runny and thin on the contrary. I still had to use the same amount of mineral foundation to get the coverage I want. It was as though I didn’t apply the BB cream.

The sample was generous though – a mini tube very handy for traveling.

Rating: 1/5

Would I buy again: NO

Review: Freeman Mandarin Moisturizing BODY WASH

March 29th, 2010 — 6:59am

Item Reviewed: Freeman Mandarin Moisturizing BODY WASH

Price/pack size: S$9.90 for 150ml tube

Available at: Watsons & Guardian

Ingredients:

Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Acrylates/ Steareth-20 Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Glycerin, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Citrus Nobilis (Mandarin Orange) Peel Oil, Absorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Tocopheryl Acetate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Cocamide Mpa, Glycol, Distearate, Sodium Chloride, Peg-8 Laurate, Laureth-4, Sodium Hydroxide, Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Peg-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Tetrasodium Edta, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Citric Acid, Butylene Glycol, Limonene, Fragrance (Parfum)

Description:

Made with natural, botanical ingredients, new Freeman Feeling Beautiful is a full range of skin and body care products to help you look and feel your best.

This creamy, moisturizing body wash, enhanced with Mandarin Oil and Vitamin C, rinses clean and leaves your skin soft and refreshed.

Review:

The sample received is a sachet, containing 7.4ml of product.

I wanted to try the body wash as it sounded very refreshing and citrusy. On first sniff, it was tangy and sweet, quite like a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. It lathered up nicely but I soon realised that it was not moisturizing. I have normal skin and can usually get away with most body washes without having to apply moisturizer. However, after using this body wash twice, my skin was dry and itchy. The citrusy scent did not last, only maintaining the fresh smell for about 20 seconds only. It was long gone before I exited the shower.

The sample was generous though – I managed to get about 5 usages out of the sachet.

Rating: 3/5

Would I buy again: NO

from sadhus to zebras, part 1

March 29th, 2010 — 6:59am

Shiva was certainly testing me as I made my way to India this time, and as I later found out, also as I made my way to Africa. It literally took 80 hours for my feet to hit the ground in Chennai. Due to plane problems, instead of flying American to Brussels, then Jet Airways (an Indian airline that partners with American) to Chennai, I was put on the direct flight from Chicago to Delhi.

Top 10 Tips for Making it Earth Hour, Every Hour

March 29th, 2010 — 6:59am

shutterstock_19234501This Saturday, March 27, My Yoga Online is celebrating Earth Hour. At 8:30 pm local time, hundreds of millions of people all over the world will be turning out the lights for 60 minutes. Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sidney, Australia, when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour. Last year, just two years later, hundreds of millions of people took part; over 4000 cities in 88 countries committed to turning off their power. Earth hour is now the world’s largest global initiative for climate change.

The team at My Yoga Online will all be participating this year. We hope you do, too, and we compiled our favorite tips for making it Earth Hour, every hour, below.

Top 10 Tips

1. Replace an older furnace with a new, energy-efficient model. This can boost your home’s energy efficiency by 20-30%.

2. Calculate how much energy your business consumes using this online tool.

3. Buy green electronics.

4. Use EPEAT to help you evaluate and compare electronics, based on their environmental attributes, before you buy.

5. Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics ranks the 18 top manufacturers of personal computers, mobile phones, TV’s and game consoles, according to their policies on toxic chemicals, recycling and climate change.

6. Food portal CHOW  has a feature to rate the kinds of packaging used for food, based on energy used to create it and decomposition.

7. Reconsider buying bottled water. Get the facts from the David Suzuki Foundation, including how much energy is used to create them.

8. Find tons of tips on greening your home and business.

9. Check the Energy Star Canada website regularly for updates on new energy-efficient lighting.

10. Queen’s University’s Live Building Project focuses on tips for commercial spaces, but these can be applied to your home, too.
