Training the Mind to See the Abundance of Greatness

yoga practice The daily practice of yoga gives us ample ground to test out the hypothesis of an infinite universe. When you see an accomplished practitioner achieve masterful feats of asana that does not mean you cannot go and accomplish the same thing. Yet it can sometimes be exceedingly frustrating to see someone accomplish a goal or posture that you have long been stuck with little to no effort. This is where the real yoga actually begins. If you look at the success of others and think that their greatness only puts you in their shadow you miss an opportunity to ride on the coattails of their success. The Yoga Sutras teach us that we should cultivate attitudes of friendliness towards the virtuous and successful. In other words yoga asks us to retrain our minds to celebrate the success of others and really mean it. We can only do so when we truly understand the inclusive nature of life. Life does not judge us, we do. Life does not create harsh lines of exclusion and failure. We do. The yogic mind relinquishes these judgments and replaces them with the happy acceptance that leads to the realization of greatness.

The path to this endlessly peaceful way of being is straight through one of the more base emotions. From a purely egotistical standpoint when we see the success of others we most often feel negative emotion. It can be envy, jealousy, anger or even depression. When we feel this devastating rush of sensations we direct the desperation of our inner yearning on others and ourselves in a negative way. We create excuses for why that person is better equipped to have the success we desperately want. We invent reasons for why they deserve or do not deserve the things they have achieved. The gulf that stands when we see manifest a dream we have long labored for accomplished by someone else hurts. It hurts because we see a mirror of all that we could be but are not yet. It is not the fault of the successful person who managed to cross the gap. Whether it is a yoga posture or life goal that we see reflected back the teaching of yoga asks us to smile at the image of our greatness and follow to beacon to the source of the light. For if we consciously train ourselves to celebrate the success of those whose greatness we admire we can let these powerful beings be our teachers. In the mirror of success we must retrain our small, scarcity thinking minds to see the potential of who we really are.

When we see a successful person whose power, grace and beauty is awesome and we feel a muddled mixture of emotions it is the time to actively practice a new way of thinking. This yoga of the mind asks you to carve out new pathways in the neural network of your brain. Out of awe, yearning, fear, doubt and jealousy arise a lovingly inspired view of what we can be. The abyss between where we are and what we want to be is actually the source of all the negative emotion we feel in the presence of other people’s greatness. It is not their greatness we react to, but our own apparent littleness. If in their presence of greatness we choose to focus on all the reasons why we have not been able to be great ourselves, we will only ever be small in our minds and in our lives. Yoga teaches us to remain open to our own greatness and learn from those who set the standard ahead of us. Remaining happy about your own journey can give you the happy realization that coming second can be easier because the path is already laid out before you. To be the first ones to pioneer a new way to be successful is hard, arduous and requires great strength. If you want to follow in the footsteps of the great ones it is often easier to walk along the clearly laid out path before you. So in the presence of people whose accomplishments you consider great drop your ego and learn.

yoga and health benefitsOnce you stand of the side of accomplishment noting can take that away from you. It does not detract your achievements when someone else also surmounts the same hurdle. It is not any less awesome to lift up into a handstand when another student does the same thing. If you fear loss of ground gained from others attaining similar results, you are acting from the ego-based fear that assumes there is a limited amount of success in the world. If you learn a challenging yoga posture and someone else also manages to do it too, it does not make your posture any less valuable. It just means someone else did it too. You could even say that when many people attain the same results it gets easier and easier for even more people to attain those results. Rather than making it less meaningful, it means the impact is greater and further reaching. In a sense when a massive amount of people are able to walk the path laid out ahead of them the unification of desire, goal and ideal is so powerful so that these individuals in some way stand as one. This unity amplifies the original message and makes it stronger.

While we are all unique and make a vital, unrepeatable contribution to the universe, if you think you are more deserving of a better place because of your attainments then success has actually evaded you. Instead when success is a reflection of a happy inner state and comes with a zen-like non-attachment to the results, success is guaranteed regardless of the outward results. But when you attain success and fear the loss of it you are caught in the scarcity mode of being that assumes there is a limited number of coupons for success available and that the only way anyone else will attain the same results is to steal it from you. But that’s neither true nor realistic. If you believe that you have to protect your assets by creating spheres of influence where your power is the ultimate will, you will create a war between worlds, people and communities that will actually destroy everything you hold dear. The wisdom of yoga teaches you to relax your attachment to your achievements and let go of the notion of your own preciousness just long enough to be generous to your fellow human beings. Only then will you have more than you ever imagined possible.

Longterm yoga practitioners learn that if you want to be a truly great person you have to master not just the attainment of material success and accomplishment, but the enlightened perspective to remain non- attached and peaceful when it is time to let it all go. The truth is that despite our property laws, trademarking, copyrighting and ownership deeds we do not actually own or control anything. In a sense we have it all on vibrational loan from the energetic world and it could all be gone tomorrow. Instead of ownership, perhaps stewardship is a more enlightened way to navigate through life. Success is a not possession when we attain it. Instead it is an experience that we receive and like all experience it passes. If we try to hold onto it we lose it. If we grasp at it with severe yearning and painful attachment we will never get it. Every experience comes into our life to enrich us and then it leaves. Sometimes we love what we have so much so that we never want it to change. Sometimes we hate what we have so much so that all we want is for it to change. But yoga helps us learn that the reality of life is that everything changes sooner or later. Nothing in the material world lasts forever so the only lasting peace comes from aligning your sense of self with the eternal nature of your being within. The residual feeling of every experience is an echo of love etched into our soul’s memory. This window into eternity is all we can really hope to outlast us.

Kanebo Lavshuca Makeup Base (Moist)

Pretty packaging… that is the main reason why I bought this makeup base. Other than Moist version, Lavshuca Makeup Base also has pore concealing and UV protection versions, apparently the pore concealing is most sellable one amidst these three. I am also fussy about the visible pore, however I knew very well that mine is [...]

Lime Crime

Hey there,

Thought i’d do a random post on a new brand – Space.NK are teaming up with ‘Lime Crime‘, a fun and unique U.S. makeup brand! ’So Bright, It’s Illegal!’ is their tagline, and i couldn’t agree more. One look at the homepage of the website, and i knew i was in for a crazy ride.

At the moment, all that’s for sale on the online store are lipsticks and glitter pigments but, you can see a fuller range of products if you pop into Space.NK in April, which is when they’re being launched. I’ll do a mini post when it’s officially launched as soon as i know :)

Now, the website raves about how highly pigmented their products are, and in the ‘makeup tips’ section, they say most of the reason why some eyeshadows don’t look good on and why they crease is because they’re low quality, as opposed to their high quality pigments/eyeshadows which is completely true!

From what i can see on the ‘Lime Crime‘ site, the eyeshadows are called ‘magic dust‘ and with each colour comes a enchanted/fairy themed name and story to go with it.

For example, a gorgeous coppery-orangey magic dust called ‘cleopatra‘ has this story to go with it:

Eighteen year old Cleopatra is banished from Egypt. To sneak back into her castle, she devises a brilliant plan. She is rolled inside a golden rug – a supposed gift for visiting Caesar – and smuggled inside by her faithful servant. Once in Caesar’s quarters, servant unrolls the rug to reveal the stunning Cleopatra. Caesar is impressed; not only is Cleopatra bold and cunning, but also undeniably beautiful – much more so than the rug she arrived in. By morning, Caesar pronounces Cleopatra the Queen of Egypt, and the couple begins their scandalous affair which will change history forever.

The one i’ve set my eyes on is ‘fairy wings’ magic dust. The story goes something like this…

Fiona was ashamed of them. She hid them under her shirt, tucked them behind a bra, and even tried to bind them against her body. If anyone else had them, they weren’t this big. Such were her thoughts when she heard plaintive cries of a kitten and horrified gasps coming from a crowd. The house was engulfed in flames with the kitten perched on a pipe on the third floor, as the helpless owners stood beneath. As the neighborhood looked on, Fiona unfurled her wings for the first time. As she descended with the rescued kitten in her arms, she knew there was no shame in being a fairy.

The ‘magic dusts’ retail at $12, so i’m guessing they’ll be around £8-£9 here. And the lipstick – don’t get me started on them! They retail at $16, so i think they’ll be around £11-£12. Ranging from bright blue to lilac to pastel pink to striking red, there isn’t a crazy colour you can’t find here! My favourite so far is Centrifuchsia’ (pictured to the right) with this lil’ story:

She sighed and scribbled more notes in her lab book. Calina was absolutely determined to find the answers hidden in these samples. Modern scientific advancements had accomplished many glorious things– bioluminescent lanterns lit the town in an array of gorgeous hues, hologram clothing and jewelry provided anyone and everyone with the most glamourous means of self-expression, and unicorns danced gleefully through meadows and city parks. Yes, with a fragment of DNA recovered from a sample preserved in a glittering glacier, scientists had reintroduced unicorns to the world! But now they were suffering from a mysterious genetic anomaly. She fired up the shiny Centrifuchsia 3000 (even the lab equipment was aesthetically pleasing these days) and got back to work….

Overall, i’m fascinated by this wonderfully unique brand, and i’ll definitely by buying and trying it at Space.NK this April!

Eyelash Curling Tip.

Hey there,

Okay, so after Tamara became obsessed with the Shu Uemura eyelash curler, I decided to go out and buy one myself (click on the space nk link  in the box on the left->).

I thought that i should do a review of the curlers too – a second opinion can’t hurt…

Oh my lord – it is hard to describe the true amazingness of these eyelash curlers. My eyelashes practically reach my eyebrows and thats without mascara. Today i had 7 compliments about the length of my eyelashes and all i had on them was 1 layer of collection 2000 mascara. The curl also holds for hours – I curled my lashes at 7am and was still getting compliments at 5pm.

I really do swear that these curlers are miracle workers, but with any eyelash curler people ALWAYS end up with an obvious line where the curling happened and this extremelly annoyed me so I made it my task to find away of not getting this crimp mark.

Now I know that it’s less obvious you’ve used a curler (and you get longer lashes) the closer to your eyelid but your lashes to change shape so the line will be obvious somewhere.

When you curl your eyelashes instead of just holding them still, (shu umera ones need 5ish) you should open and close the curlers repeatedly for about double the time. Okay, so it may take just a few seconds longer but the results really are visible. Your lashes will look more natural yet still sky-high at the same time.  This technique is used by the best makeup artists too, and is one of my favourite tips.

Here’s a link where you can buy them online at Space.NK : Shu Uemura Curlers

The Sephora Problem

When a smaller, indie company treats us poorly, we tend to avoid doing business with that company, even after just one bad experience. Why is it that when a large company doesn’t value our business, we keep running back?

I have had bad experience after bad experience with Sephora over the years, mostly amounting to complete lack of customer service at my local store (there’s nothing like being completely ignored by all employees on the floor when the store is virtually empty), but it was so easy to walk in and browse when I was already at the mall. Only recently did I start having a more positive experience after I explained, in detail, how poor the customer service is at my local store via the standard online after-purchase survey. I thought things were turning around, and I was feeling better about shopping there.

At my last visit, I came across some eyeliner pencils I hadn’t seen before, the Sephora Nano pencils. They’re smaller, like the mini Urban Decay 24/7s that come in sets, come in quite a few colors (greens and blues, yay!), and are a relatively small investment at $5 each. They seemed just perfect for someone like me, someone who loves playing with color but doesn’t get to wear makeup often and probably won’t ever use up a full-size green eyeliner pencil.

One problem: there were no ingredient listings on the pencils.

Or the display.

Or sephora.com when a couple employees went looking for me.

With my petroleum allergy it is extremely important I confirm I’m not painting mineral oil around my eyes before I find out the hard way – via burning hives and blistering. So I thought I’d contact their customer service via the website contact form. The page states they will respond “within 24-48 hours,” so I figured, why not? And on March 1st, I fired off an email.

Two days came and went. Two weeks came and went.

I searched my inbox, my spam folders, everywhere. I was still getting Beauty Insider emails though, so maybe it was something else. I wondered if I had typed the wrong email address.

On March 20th, I visited the contact page, intent on sending another email. My email address auto-filled from Firefox thanks to my previous visit to the contact page, and it came up correct, to my concern; that meant that my first email had been ignored. I sent another message.

Then I waited. A week. And received nothing. Again.

I sent this message on March 26th around 9:10pm (GMT-5), with a different email provider for my contact information:

I am requesting a copy of the ingredients lists for the Sephora Nano Eyeliner Pencils. I have requested the ingredients previously, but I unsure if they were filtered out by my spam filter as I have not received a response. Thank you.

Unfortunately, listening to someone prattle off a number of chemicals over the phone eliminates the possibility of using Sephora’s 1-877 number, and calling said number to ask someone to email me seems redundant.

Also unfortunate: it’s March 31st and I still haven’t received any response.

Sandra Bullock & Jesse James – What Will Happen?

I recently wrote a blog post about Sandra Bullock (http://budurl.com/e6n2) and I remember thinking how nice it was that she was so happy, because she deserved it.

Now, all I can think about is “what was Jesse James thinking”!

“Jesse checked himself into a treatment facility to deal with personal issues,” his rep said in a statement. “He realized that this time was crucial to help himself, help his family and help save his marriage.”

What do you think will happen?  Can their marriage survive?

The Danger of Sunburn on Brown Skin!

A lot is written on proper skin care and how to protect against the harmful rays of the sun; what is often implied in these musings as well is that skin cancer is a concern primarily of those with fair skin. The truth could not be further off base.  Just because a skin tone naturally contains more melanin does not mean it is risk free from skin cancer.

An increase of skin pigmentation does add protection against the UV rays of the sun, but it is not a shield. Those with brown skin must also use proper skin care products to guard against the harmful rays of the sun; the use of SPF sunscreen when sun bathing and swimming is mandatory. It is actually more important to avoid sunburn on brown skin, as it is oftentimes much more difficult in the long run to identify and treat skin issues caused by excessive sun, such as subtle changes in moles. This difficulty in diagnosis often delays a skin cancer diagnoses in those from African-American, Asian, Latino, and Native American backgrounds, which increases the morbidity and mortality rates for several types of skin cancer in comparison to their white counterparts.

The following skin care guidelines are recommended by The American Academy of Dermatology:

Food Secrets For Beautiful Skin!

Skin care advice usually starts with using anti aging skin care products, remembering to use sun-protection, using skin care moisturizer cream, always removing your makeup before going to bed, maintaining an exercise routine, etc.

While these are all effective beauty secrets, we should also remember that diet also plays an important role in maintaining beautiful skin.

Scientists from Australia evaluated the diets of 1,119 women and found that there was a 27% reduction in the development of precancerous skin lesions in women who drank one glass of red or white wine daily.  There was also a similar effect associated with eating six ounces of oily fish (tuna or salmon) weekly.

The antioxidants in wine and the omega-3 fatty acids in certain fish may help combat the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation.

So, when developing your skin care regimen, remember these food secrets for beautiful skin!

Health and Beauty Tips – Snake Massages!

Are snake massages really a health and beauty tip?  Apparently so!

You can get a snake massage for about $70-$80.   Health articles claim the non-venomous snakes are very lively and they actually relieve aching muscles and stiff joints.

One client says, “I’m actually afraid of snakes, but the therapeutic effects are really good”.

A spokeswoman says, “Snake massages are said to produce a feeling of relaxation as the muscles in their bodies stimulate blood flow and massage tense joints”.

Personally, I’ll stick to the old-fashioned therapeutic massage!  What do you think?
